In this video, we break down a common mistake small businesses make with their websites—being too generic! We review a cleaning and alteration business’s website and highlight why missing key elements like real photos, clear services, and strong calls to action can cost you customers.

Key Takeaways:

  • Think Like a Customer – Your website should immediately answer what customers need: location, contact details, and a clear visual of your business.
  • Use High-Quality Images – A homepage without a large, engaging image of your storefront and team misses an opportunity to attract walk-in customers.
  • Service Pages Matter – Each service should have its own dedicated page to improve Google rankings and help customers find exactly what they need.
  • Mobile-Friendliness Is Essential – Many customers browse on their phones, so a site that isn’t mobile-friendly loses potential business.
  • Avoid Unnecessary Features – If an app isn’t critical to your business, investing in one may not be the best use of resources. Focus on making your website intuitive and effective.
  • Strong Calls to Action (CTAs) – Your website should guide visitors toward a clear action: visiting your store, calling you, or making an appointment.

If you want a good website design for your tanning salon, this is it. Let me show you what they’re doing right. First of all, they have their logo prominently displayed, along with their contact information, including the

Here’s a great business with a big problem with their website—let’s check it out. If you’re looking for web design for your cleaning and alteration business, don’t do this.

Basically, you need to put yourself in the mind of your customers. What does a customer want out of this website? It’s not bad to have the location and phone number, but what are you really trying to do? You want to show them what your business looks like. Right now, on the homepage, there’s no big image that clearly says, Here’s what our location looks like. That’s a huge missed opportunity because you want drive-by customers to recognize your business and think, Oh, that’s where I’m going! The only image of this business I could find was way down here in a tiny thumbnail, which does nothing to excite or encourage a visit.

This is a great business! I’ve personally used them for dry cleaning. But they have a services page that is lacking. While it’s good that they list their services, they should have a separate page for each service to help them rank better on Google. The homepage also feels too generic. It doesn’t tell me anything unique about this business—just some generic text and an address. I don’t even see, without clicking, what their services actually are. And the entire website is just a single page.

Let’s check if the site is mobile-friendly. When I open it on mobile, it’s clear—it’s not optimized for mobile! That’s a huge problem because most customers browse on their phones. If they struggle to navigate your website, they’re likely to give up and go somewhere else. This business also has a token program and an app link, but honestly, they probably don’t need an app. That’s likely a wasted investment when their primary goal should be getting customers to visit or contact them.

When you build a website, think about your goals. Do you want people to visit your store or call you? Then your website should make it easy for them to do just that. To get more customers in the door, you need big, clear images of your business—inside and out. People should see smiling staff and happy customers, which helps build trust. Highlighting customer reviews establishes credibility, and using strong call-to-action buttons encourages people to call or visit.

The biggest mistake I see on small business websites is that they are too generic and fail to convert visitors into customers. The key difference-makers are great photos, customer reviews, and clear calls to action.
